Kniphofia uvaria

Red-hot pokers in the wild

Kniphofia uvaria (Red-hot poker) in full flowerWe were sitting on a rock admiring the view over the farm one day when we noticed a field of orange.  After hiking closer we discovered it was a marshy area covered in red-hot pokers.  These plants are popular garden plants, but are quite rare in their natural habitat (which is marshy fynbos/restiod vegetation).
