Pick Your Own Proteas

All about picking your own proteas on the Fijnbosch Farme on the West Coast of South Africa.

Come and enjoy a weekend at the lovely Sun Mountain Farm Guest Cottages. Walk, swim, relax and then gather a lovely bunch of protea flowers from Fijnbosch Farme to show your friends and family a wonderful souvenir of your stay.

This is a rare opportunity. One cannot legally pick wild flowers except with the permission of the land-owner and Cape Nature Conservation. We are in a position to give you that permission and a lot more. Fijnbosch Farme will give you a little brochure explaining how to cut and prune proteas, and how to identify the proteas you may cut. We will also supply the pruning shears and other equipment for your use.

You will see the sugarbirds and sunbirds on the protea bushes and experience the delight of being in a place where nothing has been harmed by man.

Please Note: Fire Damage

This facility is not available for the next few years after the fire. Fortunately the fire means that everything will be resprouting better than before, but until then there are no proteas to be cut. Sorry.

The proteas available for picking are:

Protea repens - the original sugarbushProtea Repens (sugarbush), available from January to September
Cost: R1 per stem

Protea nerifolia - the bearded proteaProtea Nerifolia (black-bearded protea), available from March to September
Cost: R1 per stem

Protea cyanaroides - the king proteaProtea Cyanaroides (king protea), limited availability all year round
Cost: R5 per stem

Protea magnifica - the queen proteaProtea Magnifica (queen protea), available July to November
Cost: R4 per stem

The cost is R5 per person, plus the price of each flower cut depending on the species (prices shown above). This includes use of equipment, an informative little brochure, and a receipt that gives you permission to transport the flowers should Cape Nature Conservation stop you on the road to find out where you picked the flowers.
